5.1 Mediterranean diet The traditional Mediterranean diet (MeDiet), recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is characterized by a complete, minimally processed plant-based diet (cereals, legumes, vegetables, fruits, and nuts), small amounts of meat, milk, and dairy products, and moderate amounts of red wine, nuts, olive oil, and fatty fish (Figure 3A) (111, 112)
