Fish Among Rocks, Edwin Stetson's Old Carved and Painted Folk Art Plaque civil war tintype with some loss of paint

with some loss of paint which I think rather adds to their charm

But as there are two complete sheets and also two with some of the animals long ago removed

from pale blond to khaki to olive to brown

brass shoe and boot silhouettes of this ilk were a Victorian era thing in Great Britain

which I believe translates as "egg cup"--a bit elusive

Fish Among Rocks, Edwin Stetson's Old Carved and Painted Folk Art Plaque civil war tintype with some loss of paintThis one was proudly signed by Edwin Stetson on reverse, which includes another drawing of a fish, and then another "Ed" for good measure. I think it's just terrific, very naive and also transcendent, with shallow relief carving giving a bit of dimension to the fish and chunky rocks below. I love the patch of white at top, distinguishing sea from sky, and the painterly treatment of this great green and yellow fish against deep blue. 6 1 8" x 4" x 3
